History

On 24 February 1924 an association for canoe, sailing and motorboating was founded under the name “Freier Wassersport”. Jakob Kuhn was elected first chair, Fritz Drettmann secretary and Ludwig Borsch treasurer. On 18 April 1924 a meeting at the “Feldschlößchen” in Grambkermoor resolved to place a landing stage in the outer basin of the drainage works and to build a boathouse next to the old forge. After electrification of the pumping station, the vacated boiler house could be taken over as boathouse and store on 24 October 1924. In 1928, at the request of fellow water-sports friends, the Findorf, Weser and Aumund sections were founded; early in 1929 the Ochtum section followed. In 1932 the fleet of the Lesum section, today's LUV, already comprised 37 sailing boats, 35 motorboats, 13 canoes and 4 folding boats. The first races ran from the Wümme bridge to Wasserhorst; later many regattas were organised on the Hamme and the Weser. In June 1933 enforced political alignment took place, though the old board effectively remained in office. Renaming as Wassersportverein “LUV” followed in 1935. After the war the military government dissolved all sports clubs. Only in 1947 was sailing on the Weser allowed again, and regattas resumed. Among club figures was “Teufelssegler” Robert Diwicki, who won the German sailing-canoe championship six times and in 1952 received Bremen's plaque for outstanding sporting achievement. Weser deepening made berthing on the Weser harder; in 1967 a 20-metre jetty was moored on the Hunte at Elsfleth as a weekend base. In 1971 the club had to move to today's berth. In 1975 a 70-metre facility was built at Grohn and extended to 110 metres in 1979. After construction of the Hunte barrage and relocation of the river, the old arm has since 1980 been a calm weekend berth behind a lock. In 1984 a new pumping station at Wasserhorst forced relocation plans; the former Burmester hall was to be bought but burned down in early 1985. The present site was then leased and a 1,256 m² hall built, inaugurated in 1986. The same year a 120-metre jetty at Flathmann was acquired and a 60-metre jetty for Wasserhorst built in parallel. In 1996 the Grohn and Flathmann facilities could be pile-anchored at a cost of 90,000 DM financed by a loan. In autumn 2005 a major fire destroyed the boat hall with all boats. By the following year almost all members had new boats and the new hall including club room was largely complete. Today the fleet again comprises 19 sailing and 19 motor boats.
