Segelclub Aegir 1921 e.V.
Segelclub Aegir 1921 e.V. is a traditional sailing club in Berlin-Müggelheim at the northern end of the Große Krampe in the Treptow-Köpenick district. The club offers a quiet harbour with a new harbour facility, an underwater slipway for boats up to 1.60 m draught and 10 m length, a boat hall and a comfortable sanitary room on the sports grounds at Krampenburger Weg. Cruising and participation in regattas shape club life; admission follows a candidacy period and approval by the members' meeting. Since its founding after the First World War and the restitution of the sports facility in 2000, the club welcomes sailors who want to practise the sport in an attractive setting with public transport links.
History
After the First World War, sailing enthusiasts among workers, craftsmen and small traders in Müggelheim joined forces. Their first home was in allotment huts at the mouth of the Große Krampe, rented from the Krampenburg restaurant; in winter the Aegir members' boats were stored in the inn's dance hall. Segelclub Aegir 1921 e.V. later acquired a plot in Müggelheim, Straße 48, previously used mainly as a dump by Müggelheim farmers. The founding members took out a mortgage for the remaining purchase debt after the down payment. In weekly work parties part of the land was prepared as a boat harbour and sports site, while the rest was parcelled and sold only to club members. In 1927 the present grounds on Krampenburger Weg were acquired. In 1928 permission was granted to build a boat hall, financed by parcelling half the plot and selling those parcels to members of the time. From the start cruising was the priority, while the club also performed well in local regattas. Nazi Gleichschaltung and the Second World War interrupted development; an aerial mine finally destroyed almost all ships in the harbour. Immediately after the collapse, sporting life at Aegir resumed and later continued in SG Grünau Gruppe III. Besides trips to Brandenburg, Mecklenburg and the inner Baltic coastal waters, members won prizes on the race course. Notable are Karl-Heinz Wegener as a member of the 1956 Olympic team in the Finn-Dinghy class, the Augustinski brothers as GDR runners-up in the Pirate class, and the Leuenberg brothers as the last GDR champions in the Z-dinghy class. Since 1990 the club has again used its original name and applied for restitution of its expropriated sports facility, which was returned in 2000 after many efforts and is again in club ownership. Many hours of voluntary work have since improved the site, including a comfortable sanitary room. With the new underwater slipway, boats up to 1.60 m draught and 10 m length can be launched and recovered. At the start of the 2009 season the new harbour facility entered service, ending the laborious re-driving of piles loosened by winter ice. The quiet harbour and scenic sports grounds, with public transport, shops and a nearby petrol station, continue to invite sailors.
