Segler Verein Medizin Brandenburg e.V. (SVMB)

History

In 1950, water-sports enthusiasts from the BSG Medizin Brandenburg company sports community founded the watersports section. Two years later paddling and sailing became dominant and separate canoeing and sailing sections were formed. In 1952 the canoeists and sailors moved to the former police bathing site at Quenzsee/Falkenbergswerder. The first sailors moored in the small natural harbour and canoeists built their first boat shed. In 1953 membership and the boat fleet grew; a coal shed from Landesanstalt Görden was dismantled and rebuilt as an extended boat hall. In 1957 toilets and a club room with a small kitchen were added. Harbour dredging and expansion began in 1958 and was completed in 1961 with support from the psychiatric clinic. In 1961 sailors first competed with six P-dinghy cruisers at the district championship; two qualified for the regional championship. In 1962 the crew of P 359 qualified for the GDR championship in Malchow. Harbour works and the west mole followed in 1963; a pavilion was built on the west mole in 1964. In 1968 fathers built four Optimists for juniors; regular children’s training began in 1969. A Cadet was acquired for junior sport. In 1975 the campsite on Kiehnwerder opened after a jetty was built; plans for a second boat hall followed. Joint summer and winter training with Sportgemeinschaft Stahl Beetzsee started in 1976. Hall construction began in 1978; the topping-out ceremony was on 21 March 1981. A second harbour was completed around 1982/83 due to rising berth demand. In 1984 and 1985 the club raced at the International Baltic Regatta in the 420 class; from 1986 to 1989 crew Beil 1212 competed in the Pirate class at GDR championships. Team races, club championships and the Schweineregatta structured club sport. In 1989/90 the BSG was converted into a registered association; canoeists and sailors formed Segler-Verein-Medizin-Brandenburg e.V. (SVMB), uniting canoeists, powerboaters and sailors. In 1991/92 the club joined LSB Brandenburg, DSV and the Brandenburg Sailing Association. A lease with the city of Brandenburg followed in 1996. Junior sport was revived with a children’s group in 2000. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2002. In 2004 the new harbour was dredged and fitted with a new sheet pile wall. Membership exceeded 100 with nearly 50 boats. In 2005 work-hour rules were reorganised via the technical manager. In 2006 the slipway and a lifting device were renewed or purchased; members returned to German championships in XY and P classes. In 2007 youth work stalled due to the youth leader’s illness and membership fell by about ten percent. In 2008 Dieter Baierlein stepped down after 33 years as chair and became honorary chair. In 2009 a cooperation with Eisenbahner-Wassersportverein (EWSV) was agreed. In 2010 a new jetty was built by the club itself. Since 21 June 2008 there has also been a cooperation with the TH Brandenburg watersports group for pupils, apprentices and students.
