Deutscher Segler-Club e.V.
Deutscher Segler-Club e.V. is a family-friendly sailing club in Berlin-Gatow, situated directly on the River Havel opposite the Grunewald Tower, with around 100 members. The club combines passionate cruising with a warm, intergenerational community and offers a modern marina with 40 berths, four dry stacks and land moorings for the youth section. The active youth department teaches seamanship from first steps in the Optimist to competitive regatta sailing, supported by DSV-licensed coaches with regular training from April to October. Club boats including Optimist, Teeny, 420er, ILCA 7 and Hobie Cat are available, complemented by in-house yardstick races, the traditional Opti Oldie Regatta at the summer festival and sport boat licence training. Since its founding in 1931 and the move to Gatow in 1960, the DSC has maintained a long tradition of youth development on the Lower Havel.
History
On 11 May 1931, the club was founded in Berlin by eight active volunteer members from YC Dämeritzsee and SC Argo plus two members of the Prussian parliament at the Hotel Russischer Hof, with its base in Zeuthen near Berlin. The founding goal was to promote youth sailing training in clubs of the Deutscher Segler-Bund through financial and material support. Supporters used their influence to purchase a yawl in Stettin and bring it to Berlin, where it was moored at SC Argo on Lake Zeuthen and used to train young sailors from DSB clubs; training camps and youth gatherings were financed. In 1933 all sailing clubs were merged into the Deutscher Segler-Verband and the DSB dissolved in September 1933. The club's purpose changed, more active sailors joined, and they sailed regattas and cruises as far as the Baltic, but without their own harbour or clubhouse. The war years 1939–1945 severely restricted club life and led to the loss of boats; club records were completely destroyed. After years of uncertainty, honorary chairman Alfred Pöppel and Wolfgang Kaiser enabled a members' meeting on 6 March 1954 with a newly elected board and revised statutes. In September 1954 the DSC joined the DSV and BSV. The fleet grew but the club still had no home until December 1960, when members approved leasing land and a house in Gatow. Members restored the site and building for future generations. Pöppel initiated Optimist sailing on the Lower Havel; in 1966 the DSC and WSV 22 first organised Optimist races, with 72 participants in 1968 and 120 in 1969 including American and British youngsters. At the 1969 Berlin leisure show, WSV 22 and the DSC presented plastic Optimist construction. From 1967 to 1978 DSC sailors won German championships in 15, 16 and 20 sqm jollenkreuzer and youth Europe championships. Cruising has always been the club's main sporting focus. Today the club has attractive grounds and a modern marina with 40 boxes, dry stacks and youth land berths, largely self-sufficient with a mast crane and remote-controlled winches. The club focuses on youth development and the joy of sailing for children, teenagers and families.
