Segelclub Traunkirchen
Segelclub Traunkirchen (SCT) is a non-profit sailing club on Lake Traunsee in Upper Austria, with its clubhouse standing directly in the water on the western shore and marked at night by a yellow flashing light on the roof. With 282 members, 20 partners and sponsors, and more than 56 years of club history, it offers moorings, a harbour with crane, parking and storage facilities, and a lively club terrace with catering. Active youth work provides free taster days, club-owned boats, regular training and regatta support for children and teenagers – external youngsters are also welcome. Racing sailors find extensive information on racing rules and OeSV sailing instructions; SCT hosts its own regattas such as the Reinanken Cup and Traunsee Week and fields a team in the 1st Austrian Sailing League on J/70 boats. Founded in 1967 as Yacht Club Traunkirchen and affiliated to the Austrian Sailing Federation since 1968, the club looks back on the construction of its current clubhouse from 1970 and a long tradition in club and regatta sailing.
History
The birth of Segelclub Traunkirchen came in 1966 at a small Korsar regatta with six participants. The young "Traunkirchen Korsar sailors" decided to deepen their activities and promote training. In the winter of 1966/67, sailing courses were first held at the Ettinger inn and youth were trained. In May 1967 the "Yacht Club Traunkirchen" was founded; the authorities approved the application immediately, and enthusiastic sailors from Gmunden, Altmünster and Ebensee joined. The site was initially near the Bräuwiese meadow; Mr Hinterberger provided his summer house, which served as the clubhouse in the early years. In 1968 the name was changed to "Segelclub Traunkirchen" for admission to the Austrian Sailing Federation (ÖSV). The first major event was the "International Traunkirchen Sailing Days", marking the leap to mass-participation sailing. Just two years after founding, the club had 100 members. After negotiations with nature conservation and water authorities, permission to build a clubhouse was granted in 1970; a threatened eviction from the Bräuwiese was averted through the officials' appearance at the sports ground opening. More than 1000 m³ of earth were moved to build the facility with clubhouse, crane and harbour; friends donated money and worked for free. Companies such as Weiermayer, Stummer, Thalhammer and Drobnik supported the build. Most work was completed by the start of the 1971 season, with the official opening in 1972. Afterwards the club first attempted to organise a Korsar regatta in Rovinj and extend its sailing area to the Adriatic. Over the following decades membership and sporting activity grew. On its 30th anniversary, wave action caused first signs of wear on the pile building; in 1999 a breakwater was approved after long negotiations and a dedicated crane was installed. The sauna with direct lake access gave way to modern sanitary facilities. The roof was renewed in 2012; in 2018 a new entrance portal and renovation of the restaurant kitchen followed. Little known is that the first meetings and basic ideas for today's Yacht Club Austria (YCA) took place in the SCT boardroom. The current club burgee was designed at SCT, and with support from Klaus Krieger and his ketch "Komet V" the first B-licence sea training took place.
