History

The history of Jacht Klub Morski "Joseph Conrad" begins in 1956 with the acquisition of the demobilised yacht "Feliks", rebuilt by members as "Orkan II". In autumn and winter 1956/1957 the first sailing courses started with 52 participants; in 1957 came the formal naming of "Orkan II" during the First Central Sea Days in Kołobrzeg and the first club cruise Kołobrzeg–Ustka–Dziwnów–Świnoujście–Kołobrzeg under Captain Henryk Kuryj. In 1958 "Orkan II" made its first foreign cruise to East German ports; from 1959 the club worked intensively on creating the yacht harbour. The 1960s brought ambitious voyages and fleet growth: in 1963 a cruise to Leningrad in a flotilla of 12 yachts under Bronisław Szmidt and the delivery of Ryszard Kukliński's yacht "Legenda" to Gothenburg; the training yacht "Marcin" was also acquired. In 1964 the club received "Dar Koszalina", which sailed to Denmark, Sweden, England, France, Belgium and West Germany. Later units included "Meteor", "Śmieszka", "Alka" and "Erydan"; in 1972 the club took part in the Kiel Olympic gathering. In 1976 "Dar Kołobrzegu" was built and "Wojewoda Koszaliński" reached New York in Operation Sail '76 under Bronisław Szmidt. In 1977 three club yachts joined a friendship cruise to the USSR and Teofil Grochal sailed the "Polonez" solo on "Erydan". In 1978 the club co-organised the first metalworkers' offshore race for the Silver Bell and commissioned "Difur"; Irena Szalińska became the first woman in the club to gain the sea skipper's ticket. In 1979 "Dar Kołobrzegu" circumnavigated Europe; in 1980 Adam Kantorysiński led a voyage to Recife, Brazil, on "Czartoryski", later named Cruise of the Year 1981. In the 1990s the harbour hosted diaspora sailors; in 1992 the yacht "Ark" voyage to New York under Wojtek Dubois again won Cruise of the Year. The yacht "Victoria", begun in 1969, later completed a circumnavigation under Ruda Krautschneider. In 2006 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary and launched the "Na Fali" festival. A 2008 ocean-yacht project failed for lack of funds. Later came education projects such as "Bałtycka Przygoda" and the Blue Cod regattas. Today, in its 70th anniversary year, the club remains a cornerstone of Polish sea sailing in Kołobrzeg.
