Klub Żeglarski Ostróda

Klub Żeglarski Ostróda is a registered sailing club and public-benefit organisation on Lake Drwęckie in Ostróda in Western Masuria. At ul. Józefa Sowińskiego 12 the club runs a marina with pier, slipway, hangar and rental of kayaks, pedal boats, rowing boats and motorboats. The offer includes berths and winter storage, a camping and tent area, and regular club regattas on Lake Drwęckie. Juniors and adults take part in memorial and class racing, including Optimist events; guests can sail by arrangement with the club manager. The association continues Ostróda’s long sailing tradition and promotes watersports in the Warmia-Masuria region.

History

Formal club activity of Klub Żeglarski Ostróda began at the start of the 21st century, yet sailors already brought decades of experience from older Ostróda clubs and harbours such as Liga Obrony Kraju, the MORLINY meatworks water-sports centre and the PRIMBR water station. The O.S.W. Z.Ms. MORLINY base became the foundation of the new venture. To continue and expand sailing and water tourism in Western Masuria, the founders established Klub Żeglarski OSTRÓDA. The first founding meeting on 16 December 2000 gathered 26 founding members; they adopted the first statute and appointed a founding committee of Waldemar Skarżyński, Krzysztof Kurowski and Lech Widuto. Registration in the National Court Register followed on 5 March 2001. Funding came from membership fees and equipment rental; long-term loans from founders enabled purchase of the former O.S.W. equipment and the club plot at ul. Sowińskiego 12 from the town (notarial deeds February 2004 and April 2005). Supporting members from the outset include Stocznia Ostróda Yacht and Zakłady Mięsne Morliny (ANIMEX). Honorary members include Capt. Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz (17 Feb 2007), Jerzy Gawor (22 Nov 2008), Piotr Jasionowski and Marek Młynarczyk (22 Nov 2008), Janusz Markiewicz (28 Feb 2009) and former mayors Jan Nosewicz and Jan Wasilewski (9 Apr 2011). First commodore for 14 Apr 2001–14 Mar 2006 was Lech Widuto; from 2006 Cezary Wawrzyński held the role, while Krzysztof Kurowski has been club manager from the beginning. In 2004 the logo with three mermaids from the lakeside plinth was created. Since 18 October 2004 the club has public-benefit status. In 2012 it was voted the most popular club in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship; in 2013 it won first place among sailing, surfing and kayak clubs and three stars from Żagle magazine. On 25 September 2015 the Voivodeship Marshal in Elbląg presented the honorary badge “Za zasługi dla turystyki” of the Minister of Sport and Tourism.
