ŻMKS Poznań – Żeglarski Międzyszkolny Klub Sportowy
ŻMKS Poznań (Żeglarski Międzyszkolny Klub Sportowy) is an inter-school sailing sports club on the northern shore of Lake Kierskie in Poznań at Ul. Wilków Morskich 37/39. The club has a clubhouse with terrace, a modern sports hangar, a waterfront with two piers, a small grass pitch and parking. The programme includes Optimist training for children and sport training in the Optimist, Laser and Europe classes, complemented by recreational sailing with kayaks and other craft. The Zielone Żagle sailing school welcomes children from about six years of age with weekend sessions and multi-day summer courses supervised by experienced coaches. The harbour dates back to the 1930s and has been revitalised for years with support from the city, the voivodeship and the Polish Yachting Association.
History
The harbour on Lake Kierskie began in the 1930s: in 1936 the clubhouse was built in the pre-war Gdynia style with round windows for the Strzelec organisation. After the war the Związek Walki Młodych took over the site; by 1949 the station was abandoned, boats were gone and the hangar dismantled. In 1955 the school youth organisation ZRYW took over the harbour, moved hangar parts from Dębiec to Kiekrz and renovated the building. Later ZRYW became part of the Szkolny Związek Sportowy; in the 1990s sailors founded the independent Uczniowski Klub Sportowy ŻMKS-Poznań. The urban layout remained: clubhouse, hangar in the same place, flagpole and piers. For several years revitalisation has been underway: from 2016 conversion of the nearly 80-year-old hangar into a modern sports hall, clubhouse facade works, new entrance and paths, shoreline reinforcement and a new larch pier – supported by the Greater Poland Voivodeship, the City of Poznań, the Polish Yachting Association and JakśBud. The 60th anniversary of activity at the harbour brought together former members and coaches; the old hangar served as a hall and was demolished shortly afterwards.
