Yacht Klub Stal Gdynia
Yacht Klub Stal Gdynia (YK STAL GDYNIA) is a sailing club at the Basen Jachtowy marina in Gdynia on Poland’s Baltic coast. The club runs Optimist and 505 sections as well as a sailing school for children aged five to twelve; youth training is co-financed by the City of Gdynia. The fleet includes the offshore yachts S/Y Copernicus and S/Y Purga; Copernicus was built specifically for the 1973 Whitbread Round The World Race. The club organises regattas such as Błękitna Gwiazda Optimista for children under nine and offers members access to club facilities including parking and a sauna. Its seat is at Aleja Jana Pawła II 9 by Gdynia’s yacht basin.
History
Yacht Klub Stal Gdynia is an established sailing club in Gdynia. The flagship of the club fleet is S/Y Copernicus, built for the first Whitbread Round The World Race in 1973 and proven in heavy conditions; her distinctive hull lines are widely admired. S/Y Purga takes its name from a Finnish term for a cold, gusty wind over Siberia, referring to the conditions under which the yacht was brought to Poland in November 2006 – crew and ship completed that demanding delivery voyage successfully. The club runs sections for the Optimist class (an international one-design for children and juniors up to 15) and the 505 class (a high-performance two-person dinghy with symmetrical spinnaker and trapeze). There is also a sailing school for children aged five to twelve; training for children and juniors is co-financed by the City of Gdynia. Regattas such as Błękitna Gwiazda Optimista for children under nine are held regularly. The club grounds lie at Basen Jachtowy with access from the yacht harbour. Long-standing member Captain Adam Woźniak, a former commodore, also marked sixty years of sailing on the Gulf of Gdańsk.
