Yachtklub Achenkirch YKA
Yachtklub Achenkirch (YKA) is the sailing club on Lake Achensee in Tyrol and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. The club grounds lie on the eastern lakeside road near Achenkirch and include a clubhouse with terrace, a large pier with moorings, a crane, nearly 60 buoys, land storage, a slipway and a dinghy pier. The club regularly hosts regattas in the Surprise, Monas and Dyas classes and runs an active youth section with Optimist training, a youth week and the Kids Achensee Opti Cup. New members and visiting sailors are welcome; the club is committed to the Safe Sailing code of conduct and organises events around the Blue Ribbon of Lake Achensee.
History
On 25 October 1974, 20 enthusiastic sailors resolved to found their own sailing club. On 31 October 1974 the statutes were adopted at the first general meeting; the club has since been called Yachtklub Achenkirch (YKA). Ing. Dieter Wieser was elected chairman. In spring 1975 the first season began with a few dinghies at the Sixenhof site. On 1 January 1976 the club secured a lease on today's lakeside grounds, followed by fencing and a slipway. In 1977 the first floating pier entered service, creating a yacht harbour facility. In 1981 YKA joined the Austrian Sailing Federation (ÖSV) and the Tyrolean Sailing Clubs Association (VTS). A boat crane followed in 1983 for the first keelboats, and an electric winch for the slipway in 1985. In 1989 the first motorised rescue boat and the timber-block clubhouse were inaugurated. In 1991 adjacent TIWAG land was leased; in 1992 a new hydraulic crane entered service. At Whitsun 1995 the club celebrated 20 years; in 1996 it was among the first Austrian sailing clubs with its own website. In 1997 the race committee boat Scholastika and the first Monas Eurochallenge followed. Four Optimists laid the foundation for youth training in 2000, the same year as the 25th anniversary. In 2001 a marquee, race office and second floating pier were added; YKA hosted the Surprise Eurochallenge. In 2002 came the Micro World Championship with 46 boats from seven nations, and in 2005 the Surprise European Cup. In 2006 the website and rescue dinghy were renewed; in 2007 the pier was widened. Further milestones included Austrian Surprise championships, hosting Austrian youth championships in 2012 (including Optimist, Laser, 420, 470 and 29er), lease renewals, terrace renovation for the 40th anniversary in 2015, and connection to the public power grid in 2017. After 30 years as president, Siegi Schwarz handed over to Josef Ascher on 10 August 2025; in 2025 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with 110 guests.
