Yacht Club Novesia e.V.
Yacht Club Novesia e.V. is a traditional sailing club in Neuss on the Rhine with its home berth in the Grimlinghausen sports harbour. The clubhouse and jetty are at Am Sporthafen 9; youth training and taster courses also take place at Sandhofsee. Boats available include Optimists, Pirate, Laser/ILCA, Laser Bahia, VB dinghy and J/70, with sailing on the Rhine and at regattas. The programme serves children from age six, juniors and adults, with theory in the boat house, practice on the lake, introduction to Rhine sailing, holiday courses and the annual Novesias Cup. Founded in 1959, with a jetty since 1960 and modern club rooms since 2005, the club has long shaped sailing on the Lower Rhine.
History
In spring 1959 young sailors from the Neuss area founded Yacht Club Novesia. After a short stay in the Neuss raft harbour they moved to the Napoleon Harbour at Grimlinghausen. There the club found a lasting home in the natural basin with a left-bank entrance on the Rhine bend between river kilometres 735 and 736, next to the Erft mouth. As early as 1960 a jetty was built in the Neuss sports harbour for more than 30 cruising or racing boats; it was maintained and largely renewed in 2006. Club life long centred on the jetty; meetings were held in the NWV club room or on Pulchra Nussia, the MVN club boat. In 2005 the club completed its own modern club rooms. Membership stayed around 80 sailors, yet sporting results were strong: several German championships in Jollenkreuzer, a European champion in the O-Jolle class, and regular participation in German, European and world championships in Soling. At Rhine Week, the world's longest river race, YCNo always fields a strong team. The name Novesia derives from Roman Novaesium; the Napoleon Harbour relates to Napoleon's planned North Canal. In 2019 the club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a summer festival attended by the Mayor of Neuss.
