Yacht Club de Genève

The Yacht Club de Genève is a traditional sailing club on Lake Geneva in Cologny near Geneva. The club is located on Quai de Cologny and offers a clubhouse, sailing school, the restaurant La Tour Carrée and a varied training fleet including Optimist. More than 2,600 members and around 600 course participants per year shape club life; juniors and adults find courses, Sailing Team training, regattas and member outings. Especially well known is the Genève-Rolle-Genève, one of the major regattas on Lac Léman, organised by the club since 1964. Since its founding in 1886 as Club Nautique des Faces Pâles, the YCG has become a central hub of the Geneva sailing scene.

History

The Yacht Club de Genève dates back to 1886, when an association named Club Nautique des Faces Pâles was founded to promote yacht sailing and especially racing. In 1953 the club settled at the Tour Carrée site in the municipality of Cologny on Lake Geneva; the nineteenth-century tower was later demolished during the widening of Quai de Cologny. In 1958 the club took its present name Yacht Club de Genève. The first Genève-Rolle-Genève started in 1964 and has been held every year on the weekend before the Bol d’Or; only in 2020 was it cancelled because of COVID-19 restrictions. After the demolition of the Tour Carrée, lighter club facilities and the first clubhouse were built in 1986; at the same time the sailing school was expanded and the regatta programme grew. Based on a mandate from the general assembly of 16 February 2006, construction of a new clubhouse began in January 2007 and the building was inaugurated on 18 April 2008. In 2014 sailing school director Guillaume Labérenne founded the Team Compétition for young catamaran racers, later developed into the Sailing Team. On 2 June 2022 a building extension with changing rooms and winter storage was inaugurated. Today the club organises at least five sailing events per season, including the Genève-Rolle-Genève, welcomes major Lac Léman classes such as Surprise and counts more than 2,600 members; the sailing school serves around 600 children, teenagers and adults each year.
