Yachtclub Breitenbrunn
Yachtclub Breitenbrunn (YCBb) is an established sailing club on Lake Neusiedl and has been based at Nordhafen in Mörbisch am See since 2023. With more than 50 years of sometimes turbulent history, it ranks among Austria's well-known yacht clubs and has long been regarded as a nursery for successful sailors. The lakeside club grounds provide parking, lawn areas, berths, sanitary facilities, a clubhouse and storage space; club-owned boats are also available to members. An active youth section with Optimist and Laser training, club regattas often held with neighbouring clubs in Mörbisch and Rust, and participation in the Austrian Sailing Bundesliga shape the sporting programme. Racing and cruising sailors, windsurfers, foilers and wingfoilers are welcome when they take an active part in club life and events.
History
Yachtclub Breitenbrunn grew out of the Wiener Yacht Club's need for a more competitive venue after the Olympic course was introduced in the mid-1960s and the Alte Donau became less attractive. Mag. Arch. Viktor Oppitz, Ing. Hermann Schmied and Willibald Ulbing sought an alternative on Lake Neusiedl; first contact with the municipality of Breitenbrunn and Mayor Andreas Ehrenreiter followed in autumn 1967. After the WYC general assembly rejected an expansion, Dkfm. Kurt Czajka continued the talks. On 23 October 1969 the Yacht-Club Breitenbrunn was founded at the Breitenbrunn municipal office; on 27 October 1969 the Burgenland security directorate granted approval under reference SD-761/69. The founding general meeting on 5 December 1969 at Gasthof Wein counted 35 people; Mag. Arch. Oppitz became the first chairman. Landfill work for the club grounds began that winter, and provisional sailing started in spring 1970. By August 1971 membership had grown to 71. Leadership later included Dkfm. Franz Resch, Medizinalrat Dr. Franz Wurst (1976–1989) and Dr. Kurt Wimmer (April 1989 to early 2008); since 2008 Dr. Mag. Christian Müller-Uri has led the club. After the long-standing site was vacated in January 2022, a temporary base in Jois followed with a clubhouse from March 2022. Since 2023 YCBb has been based at Nordhafen in Mörbisch am See. Recent sporting history includes successes at the Austrian Offshore Championship, the Shark 24 World Championship, the EMS Laser Master and participation in the Austrian Sailing Bundesliga since 2016.
