Yacht Club Zug
Yacht Club Zug is the official sailing club on Lake Zug in Central Switzerland, welcoming sailors at the clubhouse on Hafenplatz 1 in Zug. Members use club dinghies and yachts, the Piratenhafen with the largest dinghy dry-storage area on Lake Zug, and the club-owned lakeside plot Böschenrot with fireplace and seating. The programme includes junior training by Youth+Sport coaches, Fit & Sailing on Tuesday afternoons, club cruising without an own boat, weekly 7 o'clock races and J/70 fleet training. Class organisations maintain among others Dart, Dragon and Pirate; the club runs regattas such as the Lake Zug Cup and provides a webcam and weather data at the clubhouse. According to the 2004 mission statement, the club aims to play a leading role in Central Swiss sailing while fostering youth, racing and social life alike.
History
Yacht Club Zug looks back on a long record of international and national sailing success documented in the club's Hall of Fame. As early as 1967, Edi Bernet and Rolf Amrein competed in the Star class at the pre-Olympic Games in Acapulco; in 1972 Urs Kohler and Peter Frey followed in Tempest at the Olympic Games in Kiel. Over decades, club members won numerous Swiss championship titles in Star, Dragon, 505, Vaurien, Optimist, Surprise, X-99 and Yngling, as well as European titles in Surprise (1997) and 505 (1996). At world championships, YCZ sailors achieved podium finishes in Dart 18 (2016, 2018, 2022) and the Yngling world title in 2022. Since 2008 the blu26 class has been present on Lake Zug and, with guest rights of Yacht Club Zug, hosts the annual blu26 Cup; since 2015 blu26 has been an official Swiss Sailing class. The December 2004 mission statement emphasises junior development, regatta organisation, social life in the clubhouse and at Böschenrot, and care for the lake. Today the club has its clubhouse at Zug harbour, Piratenhafen and dry storage as the largest dinghy storage on Lake Zug, and the lakeside plot Böschenrot in Meierskappel. Regattas have been run via Manage2Sail since 2020; the 7 o'clock race and formats such as Fit & Sailing shape weekly club life.
