History

Yacht-Club Weiden was founded in 1983 by residents of Seeweiden (Seepark Weiden) who wanted to share their sailing hobby; boat owners from Marina Weiden and other friends of the town later joined. After long preparations, construction of the clubhouse began in 1998 and it was inaugurated in summer 1999, becoming the hub for events, training and social life. Sportingly, the club was named Austria's most sporting club by the ÖSV in 1995; in 2003 it ranked 7th of 65 scored clubs. For its 20th anniversary in 2003, YCW hosted the Hobie Cat 16 European Championship with 110 teams from 12 nations; a club team won the silver fleet. Racing focuses on catamarans and handicap events; the club championship comprises six scored races. Co-founder and long-time president Dietrich Claus died in 2021, as did founding honorary member Franz Lindner. In 2014 the website was relaunched after the previous site (online since 2005) had counted over 100,000 visitors. In 2024 the club renewed the terrace and outdoor lounge; in January 2024 a new board led by president Markus Schwarz was elected.
