Yacht Club Kassel e.V.
Yacht Club Kassel e.V. is a water-sports club founded in 1973 and the operator of Marina Kassel in the historic Kassel harbour on the right bank of the Fulda. As a base of the German Motor Yacht Association and a DMYV-recognised training centre, the club offers more than 60 berths for motor and sailing boats as well as a clubhouse with toilets and showers. Its home waters are the Fulda; via Hann. Münden and the Weser, inland and coastal cruising grounds are accessible. The programme includes social events, fleet trips, harbour concerts and a youth section, complemented by courses for coastal and inland pleasure-craft licences as well as SRC and UBI radio certificates. Since purchasing the harbour in 2001, the club has secured the historic harbour site as a sports and leisure location in Kassel.
History
Yacht Club Kassel was founded in 1973, initially as Yachtclub Fuldatal (YCF), to promote water sports with craft of all kinds as well as camaraderie and social life. At the city’s request the name was changed in 1974 to Yacht Club Kassel e.V. (YCK). In 1977 berths in Kassel harbour were secured; within eight weeks members built a uniform pontoon system with initially 30 berths. In 1979 Marina Kassel was inaugurated so that guest berth holders could also rent spaces. The clubhouse was completed the following year; sanitary facilities and power and water on the pontoons followed. The club celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1983 and received the Willy Weier environmental award in 1990. In 1991 it became a DMYV base and in 1992 joined the Hessian motor-sports association HELM. The century flood of 1995 damaged power boxes and pontoons; the same year thousands celebrated the harbour’s 100th anniversary. Licence training began in 1996; the training boat Albert Westerburg was acquired in 1997. The 25th anniversary in 1998 featured a three-day harbour festival. Youth work led to the club youth section at the end of 1999 and a youth constitution in 2000. After twelve years of negotiations the club purchased the harbour grounds from the State of Hesse in 2001 in a bidding consortium; handover on 5 May 2001 included a flag parade and a 21-gun salute. The harbour, opened for commercial shipping in 1895, ceased commercial use in the mid-1970s and has since served recreational craft. Today the club has around 60 members and operates the marina with more than 60 berths.
