1. Yacht Club Zwenkau 2000 e.V.
The 1. Yacht Club Zwenkau 2000 e.V. is a sailing club at Zwenkau Harbour in the Leipzig New Lakeland, with Lake Zwenkau as its home waters. At harbour basin Z1, members have access to 13 club dinghies; the programme includes shared sailing, club regattas and strong children and youth work. From the age of eight, children learn on Optimists, teenagers on 420s and single-handed sailors on the Laser Radial. Since 2016 the club has run the open yardstick EythraCup and also hosts regular get-togethers, night sailing and an end-of-season sail-off. Founded in 2000, the club accompanies the region's shift from mining landscape to lakeland and welcomes guests and interested sailors.
History
Visionaries founded the 1. Yacht Club Zwenkau 2000 e.V. in 2000 to promote sailing and life on and by the water south of Leipzig, where a former mining region is becoming a new lakeland. Since the ceremonial opening of Lake Zwenkau on 9 May 2015 – created from the Zwenkau open-cast lignite mine – the waters have been open for watersports; the lake lies about 12 km south of Leipzig city centre, covers around 9.7 km² and is the largest lake in the Leipzig New Lakeland. Thirteen dinghies for members lie in harbour basin Z1. Since 2016 the club has staged the EythraCup as an open yardstick regatta in memory of the village of Eythra, which had to make way for mining in the 1980s; 2016–2017 raced as one group, 2018 added two groups for keelboats/yachts and dinghies/catamarans plus a second challenge trophy, 2019 a youth trophy, and since 2020 three yardstick groups. District administrator Henry Graichen took on the patronage. The club belongs to the district and state sports federations, the Saxon Sailing Association and the German Sailing Federation, and also organises joint explorations of the New Lakeland on foot, by bike or paddle craft.
