Motorboot- und Yachtclub Weil am Rhein
Motorboot- und Yachtclub Weil am Rhein is a long-standing water sports club on the Rhine at river kilometre 173.1 in Weil am Rhein. The club has its own yacht harbour with floating pontoons and sheet-pile wall as well as a clubhouse with the public restaurant Gasthaus am Bootssteg. Guests can use berths after registering with the club host or harbour master; berths inside the harbour are limited to boats up to 11 m length and 3.50 m beam. Club life centres on work days, meetings and the harbour community; the history runs from the 1969 founding through harbour construction to rebuilding after the 1999 flood of the century.
History
In 1968, like-minded people in Weil am Rhein took up motor water sports with water skiing. A fixed shore site was needed; above Rhine kilometre 173.0 they found riverside land with a former NATO tin hut owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The lease required founding a club, so in 1969 Motorboot- und Yachtclub e.V. Weil am Rhein was established. Members soon turned the hut into a club home by their own efforts. The long-famous Rhine festival with dance, music and water shows became a highlight in the town calendar. Around 1980 members planned a harbour for smaller sport boats and flood protection. After years of land-use and planning negotiations, building permission was granted from 1989. The floating pontoon was inaugurated in 1990 and the clubhouse in 1992 at Rhine kilometre 173.1. On 13 May 1999 the flood of the century destroyed more than half the pontoon and many boats; the facility was rebuilt and reinforced with a sheet-pile wall. Today the club looks back on about 57 industrious years.
