Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind
Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind is a family-oriented sailing club on Vienna's Obere Alte Donau in Floridsdorf. The waterside facility with moorings, terrace and canteen is at An der Oberen Alten Donau 98, with clubhouse, workshops and winter storage at Rautenkranzgasse 35. Members enjoy conditions suited to learning, racing and relaxed after-work sailing, supported by club boats, piers and Optimist youth training. Regular race training, the Thursday Challenge and club evenings define club life since the founding in 1971. The club is registered as a non-profit Sportunion association promoting sailing sport in Vienna.
History
In 1971 Yachtclub Seewind was founded as a workshop club. In 1974 the Rautenkranzgasse site was acquired; early club races used Hofbauer sailing-school boats. A dinghy store followed in 1982. In 1988, on the initiative of later honorary chairman Karl Weiss, the club bought the Obere Alte Donau site, expanded facilities, raced with its own boats and joined ÖSV and MSVÖ. The first Kaisercup on Lake Neusiedl in 1989 drew 67 entrants. In 1990 a skipper school was founded and the club joined the Vienna sailing federation. 1991 saw the first Austro-Hungarian Grenzlandregatta; in 1993 a Neusiedler See branch was created. After the 25th anniversary in 1996, the branch moved to Jois in 1997 and the club joined Sportunion as Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind. The first website went live in 1998. In 2002 Johann Fazokas became Micro-class vice world champion. The webcam started in 2003; in 2004 a GRP Schwertzugvogel replaced the wooden club Zugvogel. Later years brought renovations, Opti fleet growth, leadership changes and regional league success in 2018. Wolfgang Turner served as chairman from 2016 until handing over to Bernhard Sterf in March 2026.
