Yacht Club Meteor e. V. (YMD) is a traditional sailing club with clubhouse and buoy moorings at Jungmannufer 17a in Eckernförde-Borby on the Eckernförde Bay and Baltic Sea. Facilities include the clubhouse inaugurated in 2001 directly on the water, up to 50 buoy berths off the beach, and jetties for dinghies and yachts. The club has around 140 members; members' boats lie in Eckernförde, Kiel and Heiligenhafen, with a focus on cruising and an active club life with end-of-season sailing, work parties and social events. Founded in 1923 in Danzig and now based in Eckernförde after a long itinerary, the club celebrated its centenary in 2023 and welcomes new members and applicants for free buoy berths.
History
On 6 September 1923 Yachtclub Meteor Danzig (YMD) was founded aboard the sailing yacht Marianne in Bohnsack near Danzig by five former pupils of the Royal Grammar School of Danzig. The Herbst boatyard grounds in Heubude served the first four yachts as harbour; in 1925 the old ferry berth Heubude II was leased for twelve yachts, and in 1927 the basin beside the lock at Groß Plehnendorf. In 1928 the white burgee with black cross and Danzig arms still flown today was adopted. In 1934 a clubhouse with sanitary and gear rooms, boat and mast sheds, mast crane, slipway, winter storage and signal mast was built. From 1935 to 1939 the fleet regularly joined feeder races from Zoppot to Kiel for Kiel Week; about 40 yachts and over 90 members belonged to the club. World War II halted club life; in 1945 facilities and boats were destroyed in fighting around Groß Plehnendorf and members were displaced. In 1951 Meteor members resolved in Lübeck to re-found the club with seat in Flensburg under Herbert Rohde as first chairman. After periods in Damp and Kiel, a buoy field for up to 60 berths was leased in Eckernförde in 1974 off the Borby shore. In 1995 YMD co-founded Sporthafen Kiel GmbH. In 1999 the seat moved to Eckernförde with a long-term lease for the clubhouse site; the clubhouse was built in 2000/2001 and inaugurated on 25 April 2001. In 2006 the club gained official approval as a sports-boat harbour operator; in 2009 the jetty was extended from 10 to 50 metres. In 2011 the club counted over 100 members with about 60 yachts and three youth boats. On 6 September 2023 YMD celebrated its 100th anniversary.
