Vikingarnas Segel Sällskap
Vikingarnas Segel Sällskap (VSS) is a non-profit sailing club founded in 1899, with its home harbour and yard at Stora Hundudden on Djurgården in Stockholm. The club has a clubhouse with a large meeting room, kitchen, showers, changing rooms and toilets, as well as the historic Kruthuset from 1697 with café and party venue. The harbour piers hold more than 200 boats in summer, and the yard holds nearly 200 boats in winter. Regular youth programmes include evening sailing, sailing school, day sailing camps and sailing camps on the club island Ekholmen; the Vikingaregatta and Vikingarundan are held each year. A distinctive feature is the club island Ekholmen on Västra Saxarfjärden near Vaxholm, with clubhouse, sauna and guest berths.
History
Vikingarnas Segel Sällskap was founded in 1899 and today has its home harbour and yard at the mouth of the Djurgårdsbrunnskanal on Stora Hundudden, Djurgården in Stockholm. The grounds include a clubhouse and the old Kruthuset from 1697, which houses a year-round café. The harbour facilities hold more than 200 boats in summer and nearly 200 on the yard in winter. Membership is stated on the homepage as just over 800 members and about 340 registered boats; the about page mentions nearly 650 members and about 300 registered boats. On 29 January 1964 the VSS Veteranklubb was founded on the initiative of then chairman Bertil Käll for long-standing members of 25 years or more. The racing committee organises the annual Vikingaregatta in June and an invitation race with club championship in September on Lilla Värtan. The junior committee offers evening sailing in spring and autumn, day sailing camps at the yard and sailing camps on Ekholmen. Photo albums document the 125th anniversary, championships including the IF Swedish Championship at Ekholmen in 2021, and traditional Midsummer and crayfish parties. The club is run voluntarily by a board with committees and officials; members with a registered boat have work duty, summer berth holders also night watch.
