Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee e.V.
Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee e.V. (VSaW), founded in 1867, is Germany's second-oldest sailing club and is located directly on Lake Wannsee in Berlin. On its listed club grounds with a clubhouse dating from 1910, a marina for around 250 boats, shore berths and its own boatyard, the non-profit club focuses by statute on racing sailing and on training young racers in the youth section WANNSEEATEN with about 200 children and teenagers. The sailing area extends from Spandau along the Lower Havel to Krampnitz, offering roughly 25 kilometres navigable without lowering the mast in one of the region's most scenic waters. Each season the club hosts around ten regatta events on Lake Wannsee, including German championships, yardstick series and a Sailing Bundesliga event; it also co-organises Kiel Week. With SailNow!, training camps, cruising and a youth programme from Optimist via 420er and 29er to ILCA, the club covers both performance and recreational sailing.
History
In 1867 the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee was founded on the banks of the Havel with 14 members and 8 boats, making it Germany's second-oldest sailing club after the Segelclub RHE in Königsberg. In 1877 the yachts anchored in the great bay of Lake Wannsee; in 1881 the club acquired its grounds and built the first clubhouse, parts of which still stand today. The new clubhouse opened in 1910 in English country-house style and, with its ballroom, bar, restaurant and terrace, remains the centre of club life under heritage protection. Long before the turn of the century, VSaW yachts won international and national races. At the 1936 Olympic Games the crew Bischoff/Weise won Germany's first sailing gold on the club Star boat Wannsee; in 1964 Willy Kuhweide won gold in the Finn dinghy class. Together with Kiel Yacht Club, Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and until 2018 Hamburger Segel-Club, VSaW has co-hosted Kiel Week for decades. On home waters around ten regatta events are held each year, including at least one German championship; a Sailing Bundesliga event is also sailed in the bay in front of the club. In 2017 the club celebrated its 150th anniversary with historic jubilee regattas, a published chronicle and numerous championships. Today VSaW has more than 1,000 members; the WANNSEEATEN youth section comprises around 200 young sailors with a statutory focus on racing-sail training by full-time and volunteer coaches.
