Club de vela Virgen del Mar
Club de vela Virgen del Mar is a sailing club in Gijón on Spain’s northern Asturian coast, linked to the Cantabrian Sea and Marina de Gijón. Members use club boats including three Dina 223 school boats (7 m), a Sun Odyssey 30 (9 m) for more comfortable passages, and a Bertram 46.6 (15 m) for practical training toward Patrón and Capitán de Yate qualifications. The programme features free monthly club outings, beginner and advanced sailing courses including intensive spinnaker training, and preparation for nautical licences. Since 2005, member cruises to destinations such as the Balearics, Croatia, Greece, Sicily, the Caribbean and Montenegro document the club’s active cruising tradition.
History
Club de vela Virgen del Mar in Gijón maintains a cruising tradition well documented through travel logs and photos. As early as 2005, club trips went to the Balearics, including aboard Bolero and Down Wind. In 2006 followed a voyage to the Cyclades in Greece, and in 2007 to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands. 2008 centred on several boat trips to Croatia; 2009 took members to the Sporades in Greece. In later years club voyages included Sardinia and Corsica (2010), the Adriatic and Montenegro (2011), Malta (2012), the Cyclades (2013), the Tuscan Archipelago (2014), Croatia and Montenegro (2015), the Lesser Antilles and Cabrera (2016), Corfu (2017), the Naples area (2018) and the Pityuses (2019). Alongside this, the club relies on its own training boats and regular club days, sailing courses and licence preparation, closely linking club life, training and cruising.
