Viggbyholms Båtklubb
Viggbyholms Båtklubb (VBK) is a non-profit boat and sailing club in Täby on Stora Värtan and ranks among Sweden's largest boat clubs. The harbour on Hamnvägen is run by the club and leased from Täby municipality; members can apply for summer and winter berths and use a slipway and trailer parking. On the club island Furholmen south of Östra Lagnö there are a pier with buoy, sauna, sandy beach, swimming rocks, Optimists and rowing boats to borrow, and a cabin. The extensive youth section and the annual sailing school give children and young people an introduction and race training; courses such as VHF and Förarbevis plus the club magazine Vimpeln complete the programme. Since its founding in 1947, volunteer work, two harbour captains and shared celebrations such as Midsummer and the Kräftköret have shaped club life.
History
Viggbyholms Båtklubb (VBK) was founded in 1947 as a non-profit association based on community and a shared interest in boats and life on the water. Over its long history the harbour on Stora Värtan has been continuously developed and improved through active member engagement. The harbour facility is operated by VBK and leased from Täby municipality. Today the club is one of the country's largest boat clubs, with about 1,500 members and roughly 1,000 boats according to one club statement; elsewhere about 1,750 members and some 1,250 boats are mentioned. VBK emphasises modern berths and winter storage, varied activities and environmental care. The club island Furholmen south of Östra Lagnö is partly leased by the club and serves as a meeting place with pier, sauna, beach and leisure facilities. Traditional events such as Midsummer on Furholmen and the August Kräftköret, where sailors race to the island, are part of the yearly calendar. Youth work with sailing school and racing training as well as VHF and Förarbevis courses are core offerings. The club is run by a member-elected board together with two harbour captains; members volunteer for watch duties, launching and haul-out and as trained sublift operators. The club magazine Vimpeln is published four times a year.
