Union Yacht Club Wörthersee
Union Yacht Club Wörthersee is a traditional yacht club on the southern shore of Lake Wörth in Dellach near Maria Wörth. The grounds include a clubhouse, marina, jetties, dinghy berths, a slipway and a boatyard with crane, mast crane and winter storage hall. Club boats such as 29er, 420, ILCA and Optimists are available to active and junior members; Surprise, H-Boat and Dyas fleets as well as classic wooden boats are based at the club. The programme ranges from junior sailing week and Optimist regattas to yardstick races and major events such as Wörthersee Week and the Austrian Finn championships. Since its founding in 1886, the club has combined tradition with modern racing and cruising sailing.
History
On 14 June 1886 a group of sailors under Robert Freiherr v. Walterskirchen founded Yacht-Club Wörthersee as a branch of the UYC parent club in Vienna. From the outset the club’s main task was organising races. In the earliest years so-called week regattas were spread across the summer season from July to September. Boats of that era varied widely, from heavy cutters with complex rigs to extremely tender centreboard boats such as Flounders and Swallows. Between the World Wars racing was lively. The focus of racing was the 22 m² class, in which contests with German and Hungarian sailors were held from 1924 on the initiative of UYC Wörthersee. From this grew the European Championship, held in 1934 on Lake Wörth off Dellach. In the 1950s racing returned to Dellach and the club developed steadily. The cruiser section of Union Yacht Club Wörthersee was founded in 1962 and is the first and oldest association of cruising sailors in Austria. Today modern racing demands shape club life; yardstick races give sailors of all classes a chance to compete. The grounds comprise clubhouse, sanitary facilities, dry berths and a modern marina. The bay for mooring buoys is at the boatyard with crane, mast crane, slipway and winter hall. The club is proud of linking tradition and modernity: besides five 6 Metre boats, two 5.5 Metre boats and the Wörthersee yacht Annie, classic wooden jewels are based here. Among modern boats the Surprise class leads with twelve boats, followed by Elliot, H-Boat and Dyas.
