History

The Union Yacht Club Attersee was founded in 1886 and is thus one of Austria's oldest sailing clubs. The historical archive documents founding documents, statutes, yearbooks, member lists, yacht registers and regatta records from 1886 to 1945. After Austria's annexation by Germany in 1938, the Union Yacht Club was dissolved and incorporated into the Yacht Klub von Deutschland; after 1945 the individual Union Yacht Clubs were re-established as independent associations. Today the UYCAs is a traditional club with more than 125 years of history, built on three pillars: sailing sport, social life and infrastructure. The club pursues a clear boat and class policy focused on performance classes, Olympic classes, national championship classes and youth classes. More than 600 boats from around 70 different classes are registered, approximately 70 percent being performance classes. Since 1970 the club has hosted the internationally renowned Optimist Week annually and organises numerous national and international championships including national titles, European and World Championships. The club is a founding member of the Attersailteam, in which eight sailing clubs around Lake Attersee jointly run youth development. Infrastructure has been continuously expanded over more than 100 years and includes a clubhouse, sailing homes, pontoons, cranes, restaurant, club bar and youth facilities. The UYCAs is considered one of Austria's most active sailing clubs and regularly hosts the Austrian Sailing League as well as major events such as Attersee Week, the Long Distance Race and the Attersee Grand Prix.
