Union-Yacht-Club Wolfgangsee

The UYC Wolfgangsee has existed for more than 110 years and is located in picturesque St. Gilgen, just a few hundred metres from the town centre towards Brunnwinkel. This sport-oriented sailing club with around 140 registered boats is one of Austria's largest and most successful yacht clubs. Its focus rests on four pillars: competitive sailing and high-performance sport, active club life with regattas and events, youth work and youth development, and tradition with classic yachts.

History

Sailing on Lake Wolfgang began in the 1880s with rigged rowing boats in Brunnwinkel; the first proper sailing boats arrived in 1894. On 17 April 1901 the Union Yacht Club Wolfgangsee was founded with 23 members and 9 boats, initially as a branch of the main UYC. A strong racing fleet developed until 1914, but the First World War halted progress. Regattas resumed after 1918; Hans Schulze provided land for workshops in 1921 and donated the yacht Greif to the youth section. In 1926 the club celebrated 25 years with the strongest special-class fleet of all UYC branches. In 1936 a club house was built with Hans Schulze's support, and the club hosted races for the 50th anniversary of the overall UYC. During the Second World War the club was forced to rename itself; on 10 December 1945 it was re-established under Tuschak and merged with the Nibelungen sailing club. In the 1950s Alfred Nemetschke founded the Salzburg Mozart Fleet; Hubert Raudaschl won his first Finn national title in 1959. From 1961 Herbert Mettig modernised the site with harbour wall, crane, mast ladder, new pontoons, boat halls, sports accommodation and club restaurant; a committee boat was acquired in 1969. Raudaschl won Finn gold in 1964 and Olympic silver in 1968; five Austrian teams competed at the 1972 Olympics in Kiel. In 1980 Raudaschl/Karl Ferstl won Olympic silver in the Star; Harald Fereberger became triple world champion in Dragon and Yngling. Three world championships, the 1997 Soling match-race Europeans and numerous national titles shaped the following decades. Fixed events include the Denzel Cup, Falkenstein Trophy, Spängler Cup and Brunnwind Cup. The year 2000 brought Olympic gold for Christoph Sieber in windsurfing, world gold for the Yngling team and European silver for Hubert Raudaschl. Today the UYC Wolfgangsee celebrates its 125th anniversary as one of Austria's most successful sailing clubs.
