Uudenkaupungin Purjehdusseura ry

Uudenkaupungin Purjehdusseura ry (UPS) is the traditional sailing club of Uusikaupunki on Finland's west coast, with a history of more than 140 years. The club runs its own home harbour with jetties, a junior area, crane and winter storage, plus the pavilion and sauna on Pietarinkari island and owns the island of Kirstankari. The programme ranges from weekly youth training and beginners' courses to club regattas and successful keelboat sailing, notably in the Folkboat class. Members enjoy active junior work, open weekly races and a varied club life around the harbour and islands.

History

According to the club, Uudenkaupungin Purjehdusseura ry is about 142 years old and thus one of the long-established sailing clubs on Finland's west coast. The club rules were updated in 2022; the association register approved the new rules, which entered into force on 16 December 2022. Between 2017 and 2019 the club completed the home harbour project (Kotisatama) with support from Leader Ravakka and ELY Centre approval: a crane of about two tonnes capacity, jetties, junior huts and changing rooms, plus berths and buoys for club boats. On 11 September 2019 the project was accepted as complete. Junior sailing grew with Optimist training, beginners' courses and camps, including participation in the Garda Optimist Meeting 2018. The club maintains the pavilion on Pietarinkari (2026 in cooperation with Voimala Zaku) and the club island Kirstankari. Sportively UPS is active in Folkboat and H-Boat; in 2026 Timo Tammi and crew won the Folkboat Finnish Championship at HangΓΆ Regatta. UPS is a member of Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily ry (SPV).
