USC Segeln – Universitätssportclub München e.V.
USC Segeln is the sailing section of Universitätssportclub München e.V. and is based at the Central University Sports watersports centre in Starnberg on Lake Starnberg. The club provides members with club boats for regattas, training and leisure hire and works closely with ZHS. The programme includes Optimist and ILCA youth training, regattas such as Silberlaser, Yardstick and the club championship, plus courses for pleasure craft licences. Founded in 1964, the section mainly serves students, university staff and their partners and children.
History
The sailing section of Universitätssportclub München e.V. (USC) was founded in 1964. USC itself was established in 1962 as a non-profit club with about 2,000 members in ten sections and cooperates closely with Central University Sports Munich (ZHS). The sailing section uses the ZHS watersports centre in Starnberg and supports sailing tuition, courses, regattas and race training. Many members learned to sail during their studies in Starnberg and remain linked to university sport. The club runs several regattas each year, including Silberlaser, Yardstick and the club championship. Silberlaser is the oldest Laser ranking regatta on Lake Starnberg; it was launched in 1972 by the then university institute for physical education and in 1975 saw 130 boats start. Today USC Segeln runs Silberlaser in ILCA 7, ILCA 6 and ILCA 4. The section currently has about 400 members and offers training, tuition, leisure sailing and youth development.
