Uppsala Kanotförening (UKF)
Uppsala Kanotförening (UKF) is a traditional sailing club on the northern shore of Ekoln, the northernmost bay of Lake Mälaren, about five kilometres south of central Uppsala. The club has a clubhouse and harbour with around 70 dinghies and runs sailing schools, training camps and races for beginners and more experienced juniors. Youth sailing focuses mainly on Optimist, ILCA and other dinghy classes; members also compete in Finn-Dinghy and A-Cat. Regular evening sailing during school terms, club championships and the well-known UKF sailing school shape the programme. Founded in 1916, the club today has just over 300 members and is also among Sweden's most active clubs in ice and skate sailing.
History
UKF – Uppsala Kanotförening – was founded in 1916. The first ten years are documented in „Paddelstänk Kanotidrott“, published by UKF in 1928. Beginnings were in canoe paddling, which gradually shifted to canoe sailing and today mainly consists of dinghy sailing with skate sailing as a winter complement. A historical document covering 1957–1965 is „Inkans memoarer“. For the centenary in 2016 a jubilee book summarised the first hundred years. From the mid-1970s until the jubilee year the club magazine „Kanotis“ appeared (one to four issues per year); news is now mainly shared via the website and internet. Today UKF has around 70 dinghies and just over 300 members. Clubhouse and harbour lie on Ekoln's northern shore, hosting sailing schools, camps and regattas. UKF is among Sweden's most active and successful clubs in skate sailing; together with neighbour clubs ESK and USS, Ice Optimists and DN ice yachts are available.
