History

To mark the new millennium and meet demand for sailing among children and young people, a group of parents and teachers founded a sailing club at Primary School No. 9 in Ostrów Wielkopolski. The foundation was the programme “Żagle dla dzieci i młodzieży” (Sails for Children and Youth), which defined the club’s mission and delivery: teaching and promoting racing and cruising sailing, sailing culture and etiquette, race training, camps, inland and sea cruises, and the use of Optimists, windsurfing and other selected boat types. On 28 December 2000 the founding meeting was held and Uczniowski Klub Żeglarski in Ostrów Wielkopolski, based at Primary School No. 9 Jan Paweł II, was established. In 2001 the club was registered with the district office in Ostrów Wielkopolski under number 76; the first general meeting adopted the statutes and elected the first board. On 18 December 2001 the club joined the Kaliski Okręgowy Związek Żeglarski (register No. XVI) and thus the Polski Związek Żeglarski. At the first anniversary celebration in 2002 the club took the name Uczniowski Klub Żeglarski TRAWERS w Ostrowie Wielkopolskim and adopted its burgee and logo. Today UKŻ Trawers runs a sailing school, a racing group and sailing and powerboat licence courses, and marked 25 years with its XXV jubilee.
