The Thunersee Yacht Club TYC is a traditional yacht club on Lake Thun in Thun and ranks among the largest and most active yacht clubs in Switzerland. Founded in 1920, the club has more than 700 members and offers racing as well as cruising sailing with a clubhouse, restaurant, boatyard and harbour facilities on Sonnmattweg. Active fleets include 470er, Finn-Dinghy, H-Boot, Star, Yngling, Drachen, Europe, Optimist, 29er, 49er, 49er FX and J/70, complemented by a club boat and participation in the Swiss Sailing League in the top national division. The supervised junior and youth section together with TEAM TYC support young sailors and high-performance sport through to international success. Interested sailors find a lively club life on Lake Thun with a regatta calendar, training opportunities and a social programme.
History
The Thunersee Yacht Club TYC was founded in 1920 and looks back on more than one hundred years of sailing on Lake Thun. Today the club is among the largest and most active yacht clubs in Switzerland and unites more than 700 members of all categories. The club cultivates racing and cruising sailing and maintains a clubhouse, restaurant, boatyard and harbour facilities at Sonnmattweg 19 in Thun. The junior and youth section offers supervised entry for young sailors, including in the Optimist, 29er and 49er FX classes. In 2020 young high-performance athletes of the TYC created the TEAM TYC organisation to pool support after junior age and to organise patronage and sponsorship transparently. Recent sporting highlights include the bronze medal of Ikke Huber and Liam Berger at the 2025 29er European Championship on Lake Garda and the Fireball world title of the Olympic duo Yves Mermod and Maja Siegenthaler. The club also competes in the Swiss Sailing League in the top national division and provides the J/70 club boat “TYC1920” as a shared training and racing boat for members. Fleets on Lake Thun include among others 470er, Finn, H-Boot, Star, Yngling, Drachen and Europe. Social events, the club restaurant and a club clothing collection shape club life alongside the sporting programme.
