Tromsø Seilforening
Tromsø Seilforening is an amateur sailing club in Tromsø and a member of the Norwegian Sailing Federation and the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports. The club focuses on keelboat and dinghy sailing around Tromsøya and nearby waters and uses the clubhouse Løkta at the tip of the northern breakwater as its meeting place. The programme includes sailing instruction, Tuesday racing at Lanesgrunnen, traditional events such as Tromsøya rundt and Hestnescup, cruising, and a youth dinghy group at Aakrestranda. Beginners can take keelboat courses with theory and practice; juniors train among other boats on Optimists. Since its founding in 1976 and the inauguration of Løkta in 1991, the club has been a fixed point of the local sailing community.
History
Tromsø Seilforening was founded on 27 October 1976. The club is an amateur sports association affiliated with the Norwegian Sailing Federation and the Norwegian sports confederation. Activity centres on keelboat and dinghy sailing and includes instruction, racing and cruising. Construction of the clubhouse Løkta began on 4 July 1989 and the building was inaugurated on 25 May 1991. The project was initiated by the club after the municipality wanted to remove the wartime bunker on the northern breakwater; the old bunker structure remains inside Løkta. The building was designed by Steinsvik arkitektkontor and built largely by members as volunteer work. The port authority required a structure with a maritime character without red and green lights. Løkta is run as a separate undertaking under the club and serves as a venue for courses, club evenings, regattas, training and trips as well as a rentable event space at the outer end of the mole. For many years members have used Løkta as finish and gathering point after Tuesday races from May to September. The racing programme includes the Tuesday series south of Tromsøya at Lanesgrunnen, Tromsøya rundt, singlehanded and shorthanded races, the Karlsøyregatta and the social Hestnescup. The club also encourages cruising, for example through SeilUt, and runs a youth dinghy group at Aakrestranda.
