Wiener Yacht Club

The Wiener Yacht Club is a traditional sailing club on the Upper Alte Donau in Vienna-Floridsdorf. The club has a jetty, slipway, boat hall and clubhouse with terrace and regularly organises class and yardstick regattas. Focus classes include Finn-Dinghy, OK-Jolle and Pirat; the youth prepares for the season among other things with children's gymnastics. Founded in 1924 as Floridsdorfer Segelverein and operating under its current name since 1951, the WYC ranks among Austria's sportingly active clubs and is a member of the ÖSV and the Vienna regional sailing federation.

History

The Wiener Yacht Club was founded in 1924 as Floridsdorfer Segelverein and was the second sailing club in the Vienna area. After a brief upswing in the 1930s came the decline through the war, which ultimately brought the destruction of the clubhouse by bomb hits. After the war everything had to start again; with great personal commitment from the members the clubhouse was rebuilt. In 1951 club operations could resume. The club joined the Austrian Turn- und Sportunion and was renamed Wiener Yacht Club. The Wiener Yacht Club is a member of the Austrian Sailing Federation (ÖSV) and the regional sailing federation for Vienna. In autumn 1997 the clubhouse was raised to create a boat hall, giving sailors secure storage for their boats. The tradition of tackling problems with one's own hands has always shaped the club. Especially in the Pirat class the WYC has a successful history: with the duo Christian Karner / Wolfgang Wegl national championship titles were won in 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001; with Walter Schaschl / Andreas Gilhofer in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006; and with Gerhard Vellusig / Wolfgang Wegl in 2008. Currently the strongest boat class is the Finn-Dinghy with more than ten active sailors. On four to six dates in spring or autumn the WYC organises class and yardstick regattas; every two years the nostalgia regatta features boats almost 100 years old. According to Yacht-Revue rankings the Wiener Yacht Club is among Austria's most sporting clubs. In 2024 the club celebrated its 100th anniversary; in 2025 the 100th general assembly took place. In 2025 and 2026 the jetty and slipway were modernised and renewed.
