Weser Yacht Club Bremerhaven e.V.
Weser Yacht Club Bremerhaven e.V. is the city's oldest yacht club and runs a quiet marina in the fishing harbour, only a few minutes' walk from the city centre. Guests find berths in boxes and at the guest pontoon; water and electricity are available at the pier, along with a 16-tonne crane and free WiFi throughout the marina. Facilities also include a harbour book exchange, club rooms with the LIEGEPLATZ restaurant and, since 2006, a dinghy station with Optimists, ILCA boats and training craft. The programme covers racing, training, youth sailing and women's sailing, including the traditional Wübben Rotesand Regatta and involvement in Nordseewoche as a founding club. For the twentieth time the club holds the Blue Flag 2026 for environmental communication and protection.
History
Weser Yacht Club Bremerhaven e.V. is regarded as the city's oldest yacht club and is firmly rooted in the fishing harbour. In 2005 the dinghy station was built on the west side of the fishing harbour between Marina Nordsee-Yachting and Albatross Yachtclub; since spring 2006 it has been available to all active members and houses club Optimists, Lasers and training boats. As a founding club and member of Regattagemeinschaft NORDSEEWOCHE, the WYC helps organise the largest regatta event on the German North Sea coast every Whitsun and traditionally holds the Wübben Rotesand Regatta around Rotersand lighthouse two weeks before Whitsun. The club belongs to the German Sailing Federation, Fachverband Segeln Bremen and Landessportbund Bremen. For the 2026 season it received the Blue Flag from the German Society for Environmental Education for the twentieth time. Around SAIL Bremerhaven 2025 guest-berth revenue rose by about 30 percent; a new crane proved reliable, crane-yard concrete was renewed, clubhouse damage repaired and shower renovation advanced. At the 2026 AGM Dr Roland Behrens stepped down after five years as commodore; among others Jörg Beiler was elected 1st chair and André Freibote 2nd chair. Long-standing members were honoured for 25 to 65 years of membership, and Anna Sommer received the 2025 cruising sailor award.
