Zeilvereniging de Lek
Zeilvereniging de Lek (ZV De Lek) is a Dutch sailing club with its own guest and members’ marina on the north side of the River Lek at Nieuwegein, right next to the bicycle ferry between Nieuwegein and Vianen. About 50 members run the former ferry harbour at kilometre marker 951; the tidal harbour can accommodate sailing and motor craft with a draught of up to about two metres. The new clubhouse offers modern sanitary facilities; there is also a guest pontoon, shore power, water on the pontoons, Wi‑Fi and, when the harbour master is present, a bar with terrace. The club serves members with permanent berths and visiting craft en route to Utrecht or Culemborg or coming from Rotterdam and Gorinchem. The harbour is currently full; interested sailors can join a waiting list.
History
The harbour of Zeilvereniging de Lek lies on the north side of the Lek at Nieuwegein and formerly served as a ferry harbour. Pontoon boats for the ship bridge that stood where today’s bicycle ferry between Nieuwegein and Vianen is located were kept there. Because the Lek is in open connection with the North Sea from the harbour, the tidal range of ebb and flood is clearly felt; under normal conditions the difference is about 1.5 metres. In the past there was also a swimming pool in the harbour where many residents of Vreeswijk learned to swim; for safety reasons swimming in the harbour is no longer allowed. Today about 50 members operate the club marina as a guest and berth harbour with a new clubhouse and modern sanitary facilities.
