ZSC Zürcher Segel Club
The ZSC Zürcher Segel Club is a leading sailing club on Lake Zurich and one of the few clubs offering a complete programme of leisure sailing, race training and junior coaching. At its main base at Zürichhorn the club runs a clubhouse with lounge, kitchen, hall, changing rooms and workshop as well as a mooring field with around 30 berths; this is complemented by the Bächau site with about 40 harbour berths and the Schilfmatt bathing spot on the upper lake. A club-owned boat-sharing fleet including ILCA, Yngling, J/70 and Surprise plus the ZSC Sailing School with D-licence courses shape the offer. Juniors rank among Switzerland's best, train regularly in ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 and use partnerships for Optimist, 420 and 29er. Since its foundation in 1917 the club has organised events of national standing, including Swiss Sailing League acts and the Zürich–Rapperswil Whitsun regatta.
History
In the summer of 1917, during the First World War, four sailing boats lay at anchor on the then largely untouched Zürichhorn north of the Hornbach mouth. Three belonged to the young sailors Karl Bucher, Walter Fraulob and Walter Erismann, the fourth to Hermann Siegel. The four discussed founding a sailing club and confided in the older Emil Bryner, who showed interest and agreed. The founding meeting took place on 25 September 1917; Hermann Siegel was elected first president. Over more than 100 years the ZSC grew into the largest club on Lake Zurich. Its activities range from league sailing including Women and Youth categories to organising the lake's largest regatta, the Whitsun regatta / distance race, and extensive leisure programmes. At the three sites Zürichhorn, Bächau and Schilfmatt the annual programme comprises over 100 events. For a long time the club has planned harbour and clubhouse concepts at Zürichhorn; the next major generational project is the Marina Tiefenbrunnen. The ZSC was a founding member of Swiss Sailing, the Lake Zurich Sailing Association and the Swiss Sailing League Association. Racing is part of the club's DNA: for about 100 years the distance race to Rapperswil, organising the first Swiss Sailing Super League final, and members with Swiss championship titles and Olympians. Since 2017 the club magazine Vorstag has been published.
