Yacht-Club Weiden

Yacht-Club Weiden (YCW) is a family-oriented sailing club with a strong sporting focus on Lake Neusiedl in Weiden am See, Burgenland. Founded in 1983, the club offers a clubhouse with terrace and outdoor lounge as well as wet and dry berths between the clubhouse and the crane. Key priorities are youth development with Optimist and ILCA dinghies, regattas including the club championship and Multihull Cup, and cruising. As a member of ÖSV, the Burgenland sailing association and ASVÖ, the club combines family club life with successful racing and active youth work.

History

Yacht-Club Weiden was founded in 1983 by residents of Seeweiden (Seepark Weiden) who wanted to practise sailing together. Boat owners from Marina Weiden and friends of Weiden am See later joined. After lengthy preparations, construction of the clubhouse began in 1998 and it was inaugurated in summer 1999, becoming the centre for events, training and social life. In 1995 the YCW was named Austria's most sporting club by the ÖSV; in 2003 it ranked 7th of 65 scored clubs. For its 20th anniversary in 2003 the club hosted the Hobie Cat 16 European Championship with 110 teams from 12 nations. Racing successes focused on catamarans and handicap events; the club championship comprises six races. The organising team has proven itself at national championships and the Austrian Lakes Week. Cruising sailors share outings such as trips to the Mörbisch lake festival, and bluewater sailors are offered several trips each year; the club burgee is seen in the Mediterranean, off Scotland and in the Caribbean. The youth section is supported with club boats and an annual youth week; the club terrace was renovated and an outdoor lounge added. Today the club has around 100 active members and 75 family affiliate members and belongs to ÖSV, Landessegelverband Burgenland and ASVÖ.
