Yacht-Club Rhein-Mosel e.V.

Yacht-Club Rhein-Mosel e.V. in Koblenz is one of the largest yacht clubs in Rhineland-Palatinate, located on the left bank of the Moselle at kilometre 4.0 just above the Kurt Schumacher Bridge. The grounds include a large clubhouse from 1968, five pontoons with about 110 wet berths with power and water, shore storage, a slipway and a crane. The programme covers dinghy and cruising sailing, motorboating and youth training in Optimist and 420 with weekly practice and club regattas. Founded on 18 October 1950 by seven citizens of Koblenz, the club has become a landmark at the confluence of Rhine and Moselle and welcomes well over a hundred visiting boats each year.

History

When a Moselle weir near Koblenz opened in 1950 for navigation works, a new watersports area was created. Enthusiastic sailors met from a loose circle and founded Yacht-Club Rhein-Mosel (YCRM) on 18 October 1950; seven Koblenz residents were the founders. Soon afterwards a floating clubhouse was built from an old hull; piers and landings followed through member labour. Early regional racing successes raised the club’s profile. Growing membership made the ‘Bitzegeio’ boathouse too small. In 1968 the foundation stone for a new clubhouse was laid on today’s grounds on the left Moselle bank at km 4.0. Later the motorboat section was integrated alongside the sailors. With successes at home and abroad the club became one of the largest watersports clubs in Rhineland-Palatinate. Highlights were the 50th anniversary celebration in 2000 and the 60th anniversary foundation festival in November 2010. Training of juniors remains a priority. Today the club reports around 400 members and maintains clubhouse, harbour and an active youth section on the Moselle.
