Yachtclub Phoenixsee e.V.

Yachtclub Phoenixsee e.V. is a modern sailing club on Phoenixsee in Dortmund-Hörde and describes itself as Dortmund's largest sailing club in the heart of the Ruhr region. At the lake, members use a watersports centre with club room, storage hall and workshop, changing rooms, showers, training room, jetty and club boats that can be reserved online after an induction. The programme ranges from free sailing and Wednesday regatta training to children's and youth courses as well as flotilla trips on the IJsselmeer, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean. The club trains for the German recreational craft licences Binnen and See, the coastal yacht licence SKS and VHF radio certificates SRC/UBI and is a member of the German Sailing Association. Since sailing began in 2012 and the move into the watersports centre at the end of 2021, shared club life, events such as the Dortmund city sailing championship and youth development have shaped the club's profile.

History

On 1 April 2012 Yachtclub Phoenixsee started sailing operations on Phoenixsee in Dortmund-Hörde, coinciding with the official lake opening. The roughly 24-hectare Phoenixsee was created on the former Phoenix-Ost steelworks site; flooding began on 1 October 2010, shoreline areas opened on 9 May 2011, and use for small sailing boats and non-motorised craft began on 1 April 2012. In the first season about 70 active sailors of various ages were inducted into the club boats Laser Stratos Keel, Laser Vago, Optimists and Teenys. Early highlights included the BMW Sailing Cup and the first club regatta. For a long time the lakeside compound and a rented residential container served as meeting point and gear store until the club moved into the newly built watersports centre at the end of 2021, with club room, storage hall and workshop, changing rooms, showers and training room. Since then the club has expanded regatta training, free sailing, youth programmes, licence courses and flotilla trips, and hosts the Dortmund city sailing championship and the Ardey Cup together with partner clubs. Sporting successes such as Sebastian Schmidt-Klügmann's win at Kiel Week 2026 in the OK Dinghy and youth results in the 420 and Teeny underline the club's development.
