Yacht-Club St. Peter-Ording e.V. (YCSPO)
Yacht-Club St. Peter-Ording e.V. is Germany's oldest land-sailing club, located directly on the vast North Sea sandbanks at St. Peter-Ording. As a founding and full member of FISLY and a member of the German Sailing Federation, the club practises sand yachting and catamaran sailing with a clubhouse and Germany's unique land-yacht harbour. Regular qualification and international regattas, the German Open and youth development shape the sporting programme. Since its registration in 1961, the club has hosted numerous world and European championships and ranks among Europe's leading sand-yachting clubs.
History
Yacht Club St. Peter-Ording e.V. (YCSPO) has existed as a registered association since 1961. It is the oldest land-sailing club in the Federal Republic of Germany and a founding and full member of the Fédération Internationale de Sand et Land Yachting (FISLY). On 10 November 1962, Friedrich Gerlach, Horst Weigandt and Karl Friedrich Korupp represented YCSPO at the FISLY founding meeting in Brussels; the first General Assembly took place in 1963 at the European Championship in St. Peter-Ording. The club hosted world and European championships in 1963, 1967, 1971, 1975 (World Championship), 1979, 1984, 1993 (World Championship), 2004 (World Championship), 2013 and 2018 (World Championship). In 1975, with US pilots taking part, the world championship of land and sand yachting was held for the first time and organised by YCSPO. In the early 1970s, Hobie Cat catamarans became established on the beach; the first Hobie Cat European Championship in St. Peter-Ording followed in 1978. Club life centres on the clubhouse and yacht harbour among the dunes: the AGM on Good Friday, spring selection races, the German Open in September and international championships. Members originally came from the town and the boarding school; today the team mainly comes from Hamburg. The club has over 350 members and represents Germany as the only fully active sand-yachting club in FISLY.
