Yacht Club Scharbeutz Ostsee e.V.

Yacht Club Scharbeutz Ostsee e.V. (YCSO) is a traditional sailing club on the Bay of Lübeck in Scharbeutz. The club grounds on Strandallee lie behind the dune near the beach and offer space for about 120 catamarans plus a clubhouse with kitchen, event room with bar, office and conference room. Boats on site include mainly catamarans and dinghies such as Dart 18, A-Cats, Hobie Cats, Open Bic, Optimist and Laser; dedicated training boats support the youth programme. Regular junior training on Fridays and Saturdays, the Clubeimer series and the major Ostseepokal and Nordlichtpokal regattas shape the sporting offer for beginners and racers. Since its founding in 1965 the club has become a well-known catamaran club on the Baltic Sea and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025.

History

Yacht Club Scharbeutz Ostsee e.V. (YCSO) was founded in 1965. Founding member Sigi Bednar is regarded as the club’s longest-standing member and has stood for continuity and sailing on the Baltic since the beginning. Over six decades the club developed into one of Europe’s significant catamaran clubs, with strong youth development, international racing experience and a close community. Since the 1970s YCSO crews have won numerous international titles; the Hall of Fame opened in 2025 honours world and European championship results, an Olympic team and a Youth America’s Cup team. On 12 July 2025 the club celebrated its 60th anniversary with a festivity on the grounds, unveiling of the Hall of Fame board with Mayor Bettina Schäfer, awards of the YCSO honour pin and attendance of former board members such as Christian Dolberg and Andreas Behem. Today the club has around 300 members, organises the annual Ostseepokal and Nordlichtpokal plus the Clubeimer, and maintains active youth work on the Bay of Lübeck.
