Yacht Club Novesia e.V.

Yacht Club Novesia e.V. (YCNo) is a traditional sailing club in Neuss on the Rhine with its home harbour in the Grimlinghausen sports harbour and a training area at Sandhofsee. Clubhouse, jetty and boat house are at Am Sporthafen 9; at Sandhofsee children and juniors learn to sail on Optimist, Pirat, Laser and Laser Bahia. The programme ranges from weekly Thursday sailing on the Rhine or Sandhofsee to youth and holiday courses and regattas such as Novesias Cup and the Rheinwoche. Since its founding in 1959, Rhine sailing, youth development and a manageable community of about 80 sailing athletes have shaped club life.

History

In spring 1959 young sailors from the Neuss area founded Yacht Club Novesia. After a short period in the Neuss raft harbour the club moved to the Napoleon harbour at Grimlinghausen and found a lasting home in the natural basin with a left-bank entrance between Rhine kilometres 735 and 736 next to the Erft mouth. As early as 1960 YCNo built a jetty in the Neuss sports harbour for more than 30 cruising and racing boats; the facility was maintained and largely renewed in 2006. Club life long centred on the jetty; meetings were held in the NWV club room or on Pulchra Nussia, the MVN club boat. Modern club rooms of their own were completed in 2005. Membership stayed relatively constant at about 80 sailing athletes, while sporting results were outstanding: multiple German championships in the Jollenkreuzer class, a European champion in the O-Jolle, and regular participation in German, European and world championships in the Soling class. At the Rheinwoche, the world's longest river race, YCNo always fields a strong team. In 2019 the club celebrated its 60th anniversary at Grimlinghausen. The name Novesia derives from the Roman camp Novaesium; the Napoleon harbour relates to Napoleon's 1804 visit to Neuss and the planned North Canal.
