Yacht-Club Müggelsee e.V.

Yacht-Club Müggelsee e.V. is a traditional sailing club with grounds and berths since 1956 on Lindwerder Island in the Unterhavel sailing area in Berlin. The pier accommodates about 40 boats from dinghies to ten-metre yachts; there are also shore berths for dinghies, a mast crane, slipway and winter storage on the meadow in front of the clubhouse. Children and juniors train in club boats of the Optimist, Teeny and 420 classes, adults can learn to sail, and the youth section regularly competes in regattas and championships. Notable features are the island location with ferry access, the annual Teeny regatta Preis von Lindwerder, and membership of the German and Berlin Sailing Federations; founded in 1894, the club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2019.

History

Yacht-Club Müggelsee e.V. was founded on 26 November 1894 in Berlin-Friedrichshagen with 30 members at Restaurant Bad Bellevue. By 1897 there was a berth on the spit in front of Müggelschlößchen; in 1902 the club moved to Hahns-Mühle. In the 1920s the club grew strongly: in 1921 there were 132 members and 62 yachts, by 1926 already 196 members and 96 yachts. In 1922 the clubhouse and harbour in Friedrichshagen were inaugurated. After merging with Verein Seglerheim am Müggelsee in 1937 the club reached 260 members; in 1944 membership peaked at 410 with 189 yachts. In 1945 the club was forcibly dissolved. In 1953 it was re-established at Kleiner Stößensee with 46 members and no boats. In 1956 the YCM moved to Lindwerder Island on the Unterhavel (65 members, 10 sailing yachts) under a sublease with the island innkeeper. In 1957 the Preis von Lindwerder was founded and a new pier and clubhouse were built. In 1969 the clubhouse was extended with a large hall, youth and board rooms; in 1974 the pier was enlarged. In 1993 the club had its largest Nordic Folkboat fleet; in 1994 it celebrated its centenary. In 1997 the Preis von Lindwerder was revived as a Teeny ranking regatta. In 2004 the YCM hosted the International German Junior Championship in the Teeny class with 65 boats. In 2015/2016 the pier and breakwater were renovated after a long-term lease with the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district was signed in 2015. In 2019 the club celebrated its 125th anniversary with a summer festival at Söhnel shipyard and a reception on Lindwerder. In 2022 the slipway was upgraded by members themselves.
