Yachtclub Leipzig e.V.
Yachtclub Leipzig e.V. is a coastal sailing club with its office in Leipzig and home marina at the Wassersportzentrum Dänholm-Nord in Stralsund. Members organise sea sailing with privately owned yachts and use water berths as well as indoor winter storage there. Shared club life includes a captains' table, Ascension Day cruises, haul-out dates, work parties and participation in events such as Stralsund Sailing Week. The club belongs to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state sailing association and the German Sailing Association and looks back on a history since its founding in 1982.
History
Yachtclub Leipzig e.V. was founded on 15 June 1982 as the Sportgemeinschaft Seesegeln in Leipzig. The founding followed the long tradition of sea sailing around the club yacht "Wappen von Leipzig" and the acquisition of private yachts by purchase and self-build. Growing regatta activity and berth needs led to a split in Leipzig's sea-sailing scene: the Trainingsgemeinschaft Seesegeln Leipzig continues to run a club yacht, while Yachtclub Leipzig members sail privately owned yachts. In cooperation with friends from Stralsund, the home marina at Wassersportzentrum Dänholm-Nord was established with water berths and indoor winter storage. Under GDR border rules, sea sailing was largely limited to GDR championships; the club achieved results in IOR classes 6 and 7 and in the Hiddensee one-design class. After reunification, cruising freedom became central; destinations range from Sweden, Denmark and Poland to Norway, Finland, the Baltic states and Great Britain, plus Mediterranean charters. One member completed a three-year circumnavigation. Today the club manages 12 water berths and 14 indoor winter berths at WSZ Dänholm-Nord, is a member of the MV state sailing association and the German Sailing Association, and maintains traditions such as the captains' table and Ascension Day cruise. At the spring meeting 2026, Frank Heyme was re-elected president, Gerhard Hoyer deputy and Carsten Ziegler treasurer.
