History

Yacht-Club Bayer Leverkusen e.V. has grown into one of the largest sailing clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia and, according to the club, has almost 900 members. Several sites shape the club structure: the sailing centre at Lake Nievenheim in Dormagen, the club harbour in Ohé en Laak on the Meuse in the Netherlands, and the cruising yacht LeYa, which is used among other things on the Baltic Sea. The harbour in Ohé can accommodate around 50 yachts and has three jetties with berths, a houseboat with club rooms and sanitary facilities; a guest berth is always available for visitors with boats. In Dormagen the club runs five boat halls with a total of 5,600 square metres of winter storage at the CHEMPARK. Youth work is a defining feature: more than 20 percent of members are young people, and beginners can start from the age of seven in the Optimist. The German Sailing Association recognised YCBL in 2009 and 2015 for its high-quality training. In the crew-racer area, match racing on Falcon keelboats began in 2020; since 2023 fleet racing on Schwertzugvogel dinghies has been added, complemented by ILCA 7 sessions; from 2024 team racing was developed as a further format. In addition, the club yacht LeYa (Bavaria Cruiser 41) and the ORC racing yacht KreutzAss are available for cruising and racing.
