Yachtclub Breitenbrunn

Yachtclub Breitenbrunn (YCBb) is an established sailing club on Lake Neusiedl and has been based since 2023 at Nordhafen 1 in Mörbisch am See. The club grounds provide parking, meadow areas, berths, sanitary facilities, a clubhouse, storage spaces and club-owned boats; social life centres on the beach bar and clubhouse. Focus areas include club regattas often with neighbouring clubs in Mörbisch and Rust, youth development with Optimist and Laser groups, plus involvement in the Austrian Sailing Bundesliga and offshore events. Founded in 1969 in Breitenbrunn, with an interim base in Jois in 2022, the club is known as a nursery for successful sailors and welcomes racing and cruising sailors alike.

History

In the mid-1960s the Wiener Yacht Club sought an alternative venue on Lake Neusiedl after the Old Danube became less suitable for racing. Contact with the municipality of Breitenbrunn began in autumn 1967; Mayor Andreas Ehrenreiter supported a yacht club at the lakeside bathing facility. After most WYC members rejected the project in 1968, Dkfm. Kurt Czajka continued the negotiations. On 23 October 1969 the Yacht-Club Breitenbrunn was officially founded; approval followed on 27 October 1969 from the Burgenland security directorate (SD-761/69). The founding general meeting on 5 December 1969 at Gasthof Wein counted 35 people; Mag. Arch. Viktor Oppitz became the first chairman. In winter 1969/70 landfilling of the club site began and provisional sailing started in spring 1970; by August 1971 membership had reached 71. Leadership later included Dkfm. Franz Resch, honorary president Medizinalrat Dr. Franz Wurst (1976–1989), Dr. Kurt Wimmer (1989–early 2008) and since 2008 Dr. Mag. Christian Müller-Uri. After more than 50 years the club had to vacate Breitenbrunn in January 2022, moved into a clubhouse in Jois in March 2022, and has been based at Nordhafen in Mörbisch since 2023. Sporting highlights include Austrian offshore championship titles, Shark 24 racing, the Sailing Bundesliga and major youth events such as the Seesterncup.
