Yacht-Club Harkortsee e.V.

Yacht-Club Harkortsee e.V. is a traditional sailing club on the southern shore of Lake Harkort in Hagen, serving Hagen, Herdecke, Wetter, Witten, Dortmund and the wider area. On about 8,350 m² of owned land plus leased grounds it offers a clubhouse, regatta and equipment buildings, moorings with roughly 100 water berths, a slipway and a 2-ton crane, with a fully accessible site. The programme covers junior, youth and adult sailing, regular youth training in Optimist, ILCA and Open Skiff, sailing camps and regattas. Founded in 1954 and expanded by mergers in 2002 and 2004, the club has around 250 members and belongs to the German Sailing Federation (DSV).

History

Yacht-Club Harkortsee e.V. was founded in 1954 as Wassersportverein Harkortsee. Founder Karl Vörtmann recalls the decision in spring 1954; Erich Richter became the first chair, and the club was entered in the register on 8 July 1954. The first jetty was built in 1956; Heinrich Schuster took the chair in 1957, and by 1958 the club had 36 members, a flagpole, a slipway under construction and DSV membership. The clubhouse was built in summer 1963; jolly jetties followed in 1964 and the name became Yachtclub Harkortsee e.V. Under Horst Kaltenbach a second jetty was built in 1972; the Thiel house became the regatta office, and a solid new jetty replaced the old one in 1978. At the 25th anniversary in 1979 about 150 member families used 7,300 m² with 115 boats and five annual regattas. In 2002 Segel-Verein Friedrich Harkort (SFH Herdecke) and in 2004 Segel-Club Witten (SCWi) merged into the YCH. The club celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2014. Chairs included Christel Kipping (2010–2022) and Bruno Wolf (2022–2026); Wolfgang Schürmann currently serves as acting first chair. Today the YCH is the region's largest sailing provider on the roughly 140-hectare Harkortsee.
