Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind

History

In 1971 Yachtclub Seewind was founded by sailing enthusiasts as a workshop club. In 1974 the club acquired the grounds in Rautenkranzgasse; the site and clubroom were adapted, club evenings and social events established, and the first club races sailed on boats from Hofbauer sailing school. In 1982 a dinghy store was built at the rear of the Rautenkranzgasse site. In 1988, on the initiative of later honorary chairman Karl Weiss, the club acquired the site on the Obere Alte Donau; the veranda and dinghy store in Rautenkranzgasse were expanded, the first club race with own boats was sailed off the new site, and the club joined ÖSV and MSVÖ. In 1989 the 1st Kaisercup on Lake Neusiedl drew 67 entrants. In 1990 further expansion followed on the Alte Donau, with regular racing, founding of a skipper school, joining the Vienna regional sailing association and a first presence at the Tulln boat show. In 1991 the club organised the 1st Austro-Hungarian Borderland Regatta and set up a temporary base in Neusiedl am See. In 1993 the branch Yachtclub Seewind – Neusiedler See was founded; in 1996 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary. In 1997 YCS-Nd moved to Jois, built a clubroom and pier, joined the Austrian Turn- und Sport-Union and changed its name to Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind; the Murexin Cup was launched on Lake Neusiedl. In 1998 the first homepage went online. In 2000 the Borderland Regatta was sailed for the tenth time; by 2003 clubhouse 2 in Marina Jois was expanded. In 2002 Johann Fazokas became vice world champion in the Micro class. In 2003 the piers on the Alte Donau were renovated and the webcam commissioned. In 2004 renovations followed in Rautenkranzgasse and on the floating piers; the wooden club Zugvogel was replaced by a GRP Schwertzugvogel. In 2007 a GRP skiff was acquired and club Optimists first reached double digits; dry berths were built. In 2008 a generational change brought chairman Frank Berger; the Jois branch became independent partner club SU-YCSJ. In 2009 Siegi Saufnauer took over race management; bike racks were installed and a parking ban imposed in front of the club. In 2011 YCS celebrated its 40th anniversary. In 2015 president Franky Berger died; the floating pier was converted to a fixed pier. In 2016 Wolfgang Turner became chairman; the Mühlschüttelregatta was renamed Franky Berger Memorial and race training introduced. In 2017–2018 the club raced in relegation and Regionalliga Ost, finishing second overall in 2018. In 2019 several Pirat crews contested the Vienna state championship; Tuesday sail training continued. In 2020/2021 Covid restricted operations; the 50th anniversary could not be celebrated. In 2026 Wolfgang Turner handed over after long leadership; at the AGM on 19 March 2026 Bernhard Sterf and his list were elected as the new board.
