History

Yachtclub Schorfheide e.V. was founded in 1968 and is located at the northern end of Lake Werbellin in the Schorfheide in the Barnim district. Lake Werbellin is a glacial ribbon lake of about 786 hectares, roughly 11 km long, up to about 1300 metres wide and as deep as 60 metres. All boat types are permitted, and the lake is reachable via the Oder-Havel Canal and the Werbellin Canal. The club is a member of the German Sailing Federation and places particular emphasis on youth development in sailing. Club life includes the traditional spring clean-up, regattas such as the Sherry Cup, summer festivals, season opening and closing sails, and Christmas celebrations. The foundation stone of the new sailors' clubhouse was laid on 4 October 2004; the building was inaugurated on 30 April 2005 and has since provided space for sporting events and social occasions. Modern sanitary facilities were installed in 2005; berths have shore power and fresh water, and the grounds have Wi-Fi. The club maintains 61 berths for members as well as annual and day guest berth holders and has cooperated for several years with Freies Joachimsthaler Gymnasium on a sailing project week for eighth-graders.
